Background
Leading dental education centre situated in Seattle, Washington, the KOIS Centre challenged Takeaway Reality in January 2024. Renowned for providing dentists with world-class continuous education, the KOIS Centre sought to elevate its offerings by including virtual reality (VR) in its offerings. The goal was to build an immersive virtual reality platform specifically for dentists that would replicate lectures, real-life training opportunities, and community-driven learning.
The KOIS Centre aimed to make sure dentists, anywhere, could get top-notch training via a virtual platform reflecting real-world dental field difficulties. The platform has to be flexible enough to incorporate tools including pre-recorded lectures, live sessions, practical hands-on experiences, and a multiplayer component allowing users to interact with one another in a cooperative, instructional setting. This vision exactly matched our goal at Takeaway Reality, where we work to use modern technology to improve professional development and education.
Our job was to design a virtual campus for the KOIS Centre such that it faithfully reflected Seattle's physical surroundings. Virtual replication of the KOIS Centre would help users feel familiar, thus improving their immersion as a whole and personalising their educational process.
Project
Project Overview
The main goal of this VR Education project was to create a complete VR platform ready to provide professionals all around the world with immersive dental education. Although conventional dentistry education entails hands-on experience in real-world environments and physical attendance, KOIS Centre aimed to offer comparable degrees of involvement and interaction inside a virtual environment, lowering the cost of getting further education for their attendees.
Users of the platform would be able to examine pre-recorded courses, go to lectures in a digital lecture hall, engage in hands-on practical activities, and interact virtually with peers inside a virtual community area. Additionally emphasised was testing and assessing students' knowledge via VR-based assessments.
This project had some particularly noteworthy elements:
Users of our virtual lecture hall—which we designed to be either solitary or used by a group—could access pre-recorded lectures, during which they could ask questions and have them answered afterwards. The immersive setting guaranteed participants felt as though they were seated in a real classroom, therefore enhancing the realistic and interesting aspect of the learning process.
One of the main difficulties in dental education is making sure students obtain useful experience. We solved this by including interactive, hands-on experiences where dentists might perform actrions required of them in a virtual reality under controlled and safe conditions.
Our community space let users interact with peers, apply for courses, and instantly discuss dental issues in real time. The success of the initiative depended much on this multiplayer feature since it encouraged cooperation and camaraderie among dentists utilising the platform.
Dentists might review information before taking tests by accessing a collection of study resources housed on the platform. All within the virtual reality world, the virtual examination module gave customers a flawless means to test their knowledge and get comments. This showcases how VR training can and should be implemented in VR Education platforms during app development.
Ensuring that the platform not only satisfied educational goals but also seemed simple and understandable for users who might not be familiar with VR technology presented our biggest difficulty. We wanted to make sure that, without feeling overburdened, even first-time users could quickly use all the capabilities of the platform.
Design and Development Process
Creating a sophisticated learning tool for dental professionals needed a multifarious strategy. Along with our own development, design, and technical teams, the initiative included KOIS Center's dentistry professionals and teachers among other stakeholders. Over several months, we carefully worked with KOIS Centre to make sure their needs were satisfied at every level.
1. Ideation and Curative Planning
Early on, we convened a number of brainstorming workshops with the leadership team of the KOIS Centre to map their vision and main teaching goals. Defining the fundamental elements of the platform—that is, how lectures would be given, how hands-on instruction would be enabled, and how students would interact—was absolutely vital. We also sought advice from dental experts to guarantee the material of the platform would satisfy the needs of the end customers.
2. Vision for the VR Campus
Starting with exact designs of the virtual campus based on the real KOIS Centre in Seattle, our design crew started Designing digital copies of the KOIS lecture halls, classrooms, and common areas fell under this task. We made sure the VR experience would be both engaging and comfortable for faculty members as well as students by basing the platform on a familiar real setting.
3. Constructing Interactive Training Courses
The development of interactive training courses allowing dentists to realistically practise several dental operations was one of the most important features of the platform. Users of these modules might practise surgical methods, dental checkups, and more in real-life situations modelled by these modules. The VR simulations were designed to give participants a haptic experience that replicated real-world environments, therefore enabling their use of their talents in useful contexts.
4. Community and Multiplayer Characteristics
Among the more difficult features of the project was including multiplayer capability. Our aim was to provide a flawless multiplayer experience whereby users may participate in real time, coordinate projects, and go to lectures together. This involved overcoming technological constraints relating to networking, latency, and synchronising to guarantee that the multiplayer experience felt seamless and responsive. The community space also let users openly express themselves, share knowledge, and engage in peer-led debates.
5. VR-Based System of Analysis
The creation of a VR-based assessment system was also absolutely vital for the project. Dentists could now instantly complete tests and quizzes right on the virtual platform thanks to this function. The system was made to be adaptable, letting teachers post several kinds of tests, from multiple-choice questions to practical examinations where users proved their knowledge in a virtual surroundings.
Challenges and Solutions
Like any ambitious project, the development of the KOIS Center VR platform presented several challenges. The most significant hurdle was the integration of multiplayer capabilities within the educational platform. Ensuring real-time collaboration in a virtual space, where multiple users could attend lectures and practice procedures together, required advanced networking solutions.
To address this, we implemented a robust multiplayer framework that supported low-latency interactions between users. We also conducted extensive testing to ensure that the platform’s performance remained consistent, even when handling a large number of simultaneous users.
Feedback and Client Collaboration
The KOIS Centre gave insightful comments over the project that shaped the finished work. They participated actively in the design process and routinely provided ideas on how to improve the educational aspects of the platform and guarantee that it satisfied the needs of dental professionals. The success of the project depended on this cooperation since it let us adjust the platform depending on practical educational needs.
The team at KOIS Center was particularly happy with the way the VR platform reflected their Seattle campus. The familiar style and design helped their faculty and students to easily acquainte themselves with the virtual environment.
Results
Results and Future Plans
